In developed countries, training quality assessment of a tertiary education institution is based on graduate’s competence that can meet the needs of highly-qualified human resources as main recruitment principles and requirements by enterprises, especially well-known corporations. Training quality is, therefore, always compliant to national development strategy.

Global competition

As employee recruitment criteria, global corporations like Boeing or Intel require candidates to be graduated from qualified programs, which are based on globally recognized standards along with the long history prestige. Among the international accreditation criteria, ABET criteria is one of the most prestigious ones in engineering and technology.

Founded in 1932, ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) has been providing accreditation services for technical education program for nearly 80 years.   Currently, ABET is a federation of 33 professional and technical member societies. Each year, over 2,000 volunteers from 33 member societies contribute to ABET’s goal of leadership and quality assurance. ABET offers accreditation criteria for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology education. Since 1997, ABET has been recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Challenges ahead

ABET’s prestige is consolidated through 9 strict norms. Furthermore, ABET accreditors have hold key positions in global corporations so they favor and appreciate qualified programs that can meet highly-qualified human resource need of the society.

Since 2008, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology has started perfecting accreditation criteria based on ABET criteria. In 2013, a group of ABET accreditors came and accredited the two programs in Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Basically, the training programs are satisfied with a condition that quality assurance procedures would go through 8 month adjustments in accordance with ABET accreditation.

Vice Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology Dr. Vu The Dung noted “ABET accreditors even examine exams previously done by students and require the evidence that the contents of exams must evaluate the student’s competence comprehensively based on the outcome objectives of the subject. Furthermore, ABET also accredit achievements of graduates after 5 year graduation.”

ABET accreditation recognition is just valid within a certain period. The two accredited fields of Computer Science and Computer Engineering are valid from 2014 – 2019. After 2019, the accreditation is, therefore, conducted again. In other words, being qualified for ABET accreditation is just a starting point in overcoming challenges to maintain internationally recognized programs for a long-term period.

So far, ABET has accredited over 3,466 programs at 698 universities in 28 different countries. In Southeast Asia region, some training programs in Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia have been accredited by ABET. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology is the first institution in Vietnam that is accredited and recognized by ABET.
