Undergraduate Training
Full-time undergraduate programs
Admission
The National Entrance Examination is organized in July every year. The candidates must have High School Diploma and have to follow admission procedures according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. They have to take written and multiple-choice tests in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in a maximum duration of 180 minutes. The Evaluation Committee will review all students’ scores to set passing scores for each field of study. The candidates who pass the Entrance Examination will get the Letter of Admission in September. The examination results remain to be stored for one year. In recent years, there have been about 10000 candidates competing for each intake targeted at 3500 students.
Top students in National and International Contests in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Information Technology will be admitted directly without examination. This selection will be decided by the Ministry of Education and Training. The quantity must not exceed 15% of the total recruited student for each field of training.
The candidates with high score in the National Entrance examination can apply special curriculum: Frech – Vietnamese Training Program for Excellent Engineers (PFIEV), Talented Engineer Program, the Advanced Program, AUF program, twinning program with Nagaoka University (Japan). First-year students with excellent academic achievement can receive foreign or governmental scholarships for overseas study.
Undergraduate Curriculum
Newly admitted students can enter any of the 39 major fields of study available in 11 faculties. After completing the course requirements, graduates receive the Bachelor of Engineering in the chosen field. Students from the School of Industrial Management are granted the Bachelor of Art. The regular full-time study program constitutes the principal training system. In order to satisfy the demand for high-qualified human resources of the developing society, the number of fields of training has been increased together with the increase in the number of student intake.
Full-time undergraduate programs have been applied credit-based system since 1993. The program normally takes 4.5 years equivalent to 9 semesters. Students can complete the course flexibly depending on their competences. However, they have to finish the course in the maximum period of 13 semesters. The required total number of accumulated credits is 150, comprising 57 credits for general and foundational subjects, 60 credits for core subjects, and 33 credits for specialized electives, projects, internship and a thesis. Subject work load is measured by credits each of which corresponds to 1 lecture hour or 2 laboratory and tutorial hours per week. There are 14 weeks per semester. Students are also required to take part in two practicing periods: four-week workshop practice at the end of the 3rd year and eight-week internship at the end of the 4th year. To quality for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering, students have to complete a program of coursework and successfully defend a thesis equivalent to 10 credits.
Talent Engineer program.
Since 2002, the Ministry of Education and Training has offered a special honour program to prestigious universities in Vietnam. HCMUT is one of the few selected universities. Students with excellent academic records in the first three semesters, normally in the top ten percents list, apply for the program. To be eligible to this program, students have to prove appropriate academic scores of their first three semesters. They are organized in class of 30 students for each faculty. The class is filtered after each semester in order to retain excellent students. The program consists of ten semesters equivalent to five-year studying. The candidates admitted to this program can select their major in five fields of study: Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Automatic Control Engineering (Faculty of Electrical & Electronics Engineering), Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering.
Applying new methodology with modern and well-equipped facilities, this program focuses on developing students’ creativeness and research competences. The courses are organized in the forms of discussion and seminars. By the time of graduation, students are expected to have at least one research paper and participate in two scientific conferences.
Additional second-degree programs
HCMUT also offers the bachelor degree program to those who already held a bachelor degree in other engineering disciplines. To qualify for admission to this program, a student has to pass an examination in Mathematics and English, which is organized in August every year. Graduates of HCMUT can be directly admitted to the program. The course lasts for three years equivalent to six semesters. All the fundamental and general disciplines obtained in the first degree could be transferred or recognized for students’ second-degree programs. At present, HCMUT is offering second-degree programs in six fields of study: Mechatronics, Geology & Petroleum, Power Engineering, Electronics-Telecommunication Engineering, Industrial Management, and Civil-Industrial Construction. HCMUT is planning to diversity the forms of diversify the forms of second degree training and extend to all current majors.
Part-time undergraduate programs
HCMUT also has part-time undergraduate program to help employees develop their skills in a specific technological discipline or occupation as well as to satisfy the demands of man power in factories, enterprises and in local areas. Depending on their available time, students can enroll in evening classes at HCMUT campus or joint training classes at local areas. According to the demand and admission capacity, the recruitment based on the scores of entrance examination can be organized at the university or in provinces (usually at Continuing Education Centers or in companies) on weekends of mid-October every year.
