On 7th September 2014, at City Theatre, the "Meeting Vietnam" Science and Education Organization has given 32 Odon Vallet scholarships with total value of 416 million Vietnam Dong (13 million Vietnam Dong for each) to students of both undergraduate and postgraduate of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – Vietnam National University, HCMC. This year, the organization has awarded 408 Odon Vallet scholarships in total for pupils, undergraduate and postgraduate students in southern region.

This program is a part of the plan of awarding 2,250 Odon Vallet scholarships in year 2014 Odon, with total value of nearly 20 billion VND. Earlier, the scholarships has been offered to students in northern, central region and Central Highlands.

The establishment of Odon Vallet Scholarship is traced back to the time of year 1993, upon the request of Professor Nguyen Van Hieu - who was the Director of Vietnam Academy of Science at that time, Professor Tran Thanh Van returned to Vietnam to hold the first “Meeting Vietnam” event (Rencontres du Vietnam). This event attracted hundreds of famous physicists in the world, including American Professor J. Steinberger- a Nobel Prize winner, arrived in Hanoi to discuss on the latest findings in material nuclear and astrophysics.

The next “Meeting Vietnam” (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th) was then respectively taken place in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi City from 1995 to 2006. Many other physicists such as Nobel Prize winner N. Ramsey (USA), G. Charpak (France), J. Friedman (USA), J. Cronin (USA), K. Klitzing (Germany) also came to Vietnam for these meetings.

The Odon Vallet scholarships was founded by “Meeting Vietnam” Science and Education Organization from 2001 and funded by Professor Odon Vallet - University of Sorbonne (France). Prof. Odon Vallet is the heir of Vallet family’ assets of around 100 million Euro. His entire asset is deposited in a bank, and the annual rate from this deposit is used in funding Odon Vallet scholarships. The Scholarships are also awarded to students in France, in Vietnam and some African countries; with the main purpose of giving financial support for young scientists, as well as contributing in science development in these countries.
